With less than eighty days to go before the start, the future 2008-2009 Vendée Globe contenders are not all in the same boat. While some are busy taking care of the final details awaiting the climax on 9th November, others are looking for the magical formula to slow down the drips of the Chinese water torture, as the tick of the clock gets louder and louder.

Guillemot on track for the Vendée Globe

Marc Guillemot has just obtained his ticket for the forthcoming Vendée Globe. The skipper from La Trinité sur Mer has completed his 1500-mile single-handed qualifying passage. In strong winds and rough seas resulting from a summer low in the Bay of Biscay, he was able to ratify the latest modifications made to his Safran monohull for his non-stop solo round the world voyage. Marc Guillemot has now fulfilled all the requirements to allow Safran to line up at the start of the Vendée Globe on 9th November.

Yannick Bestaven on a quest for new energy sources

With three months to go before the Vendée Globe, Yannick Bestaven´s team has also been somewhat troubled by the announcement from Cervin-Enr that they are bringing the partnership with the “Energy around the World” project to an end. A decision taken essentially because of the economic conditions that face the firm, and in no way a reflection on the quality of Yannick Bestaven and his team´s project, as they remain determined to be there at the start of the Vendée Globe on 9th November.

PRB has hit a container

It is one thing after another for PRB. Vincent Riou set out on his qualifier on 4th August and reached Port La Forêt at two this morning (Friday) having clocked up 3100 miles instead of the 3500 miles required by the rules of the Vendée Globe. The reason was simple: the skipper had another stroke of bad luck during his voyage in the Atlantic. This time, it was a container that left its mark on PRB.

Under pressure

Little by little, the pressure is mounting. While some are busy working on the final details in the boatyards, others are leaving behind their shore base to move towards Les Sables d´Olonne. Many of the skippers are making the most of these final days to relax and recharge the batteries before the final run. The date limit of 18th October by which the competitors have to be present at the pontoon in Port Olona is drawing ever nearer.

Whilst for many of the Vendée Globe contenders, August means it is time for a well deserved rest, some are continuing to sail to achieve their final qualification or to measure up against the rivals, as in the Artemis Challenge around the Isle of Wight, while another has been busy welcoming home a glorious old vessel after a solo circumnavigation.

PRB back in the water and Vincent Riou heading for Brittany

PRB is back in her natural element, two and a half months after Vincent Riou was forced to abandon her in The Artemis Transat. After a lot of hard work in a short timeframe, the PRB shore team can now head back home by plane in a few days time, while Vincent set sail for Brittany this afternoon (Monday 4th August). This is going to be an important Atlantic crossing for Vincent, as it will count as a Vendée Globe qualifier.

Dee Caffari and Mike Golding, who between them have sailed around the world eight times, have drawn up a boat testing programme to prepare together for the next Vendée Globe. The two skippers announced the technical alliance, the first of its kind between British Open 60 teams, in March 2007. The alliance led to the construction of two identical sister-ships in Aviva and ECOVER 3 and this summer Caffari and Golding will be testing the two boats against each other to maximise performance.
