Presentation
A self made sailor

Here’s a newcomer, who isn’t really one. Maybe we could say he is a beginner in ocean racing in general and Imoca monohulls in particular, like Vincent Riou was for his victory race. In other words, he is stepping out of the shadows, but is already well known and appreciated by his fellow racers. Working with Mike Golding, for whom he started to prepare boats back in 1998, Jonny Malbon has clocked up more than 300,000 miles on all of the world’s seas. Like Dee Caffari, he also worked alongside Chay Blyth on the Global Challenge, where he was in charge of crew training. He could be seen for three seasons busily working as a crewman on the deck of Ellen MacArthur’s Kingfisher and of course alongside Brian Thompson, from whom he is taking over today.

In short, he is a well-rounded sailor with a great deal of intelligence: while Jonny is a kayaking, windsurfing and sailing instructor, he also has a degree from Greenwich University. Yet another chance for the British contingent to grab this famous Vendée Globe from the French, which up until now they have never achieved. Up until now being the key phrase…
