He loved it so much
His humour and exceptional list of achievements are the two pillars of strength for this untiring sailor, who has won practically all there is to win, from dinghy sailing to Formula 40 boats and not forgetting giant multihulls, the Figaro circuit and 60-foot Open boats. His incredible list of successes has grown ever longer in recent times. We can be certain that he would like to add another title to this long list, just to round things off nicely.
For his first entry into the Vendée Globe in 2004-05, he finished second… That just reveals the true talent of this man, who tries his hand at everything and finds success, as quite apart from his skill as a yachtsman, he is also a perfectionist, who wants everything to be just right. He presents himself as a builder and designer, as much as an ocean racer and that is perhaps one of his great strengths in a race, which is won over a great distance. Above all, he found in the Vendée Globe, a race, which suits him perfectly, from a technical and human standpoint.
He legitimately lined up with lofty ambitions for his second non-stop solo race around the world in 2008. Third as he was to round the Horn and a serious contender for victory, Jean suffered the loss of his keel leading to the capsize of his VM Matériaux. There then followed the spectacular rescue by Vincent Riou, the very same man, who had deprived him of winning the previous race by just a few hours…
He has not been put off by this disaster or indeed having to retire from the 2010 Barcelona World Race, and Jean Le Cam wants to set off again in 2012. We can be sure that he will want to add another line to his long list of achievements.
