Anne Liardet (Roxy) is speeding along at more than 10 knots towards the finish. She entered the Bay of Biscay during the night just off the western tip of Spain. As she was hoping all day yesterday, the wind finally came around to the north west and the yachtswoman was able to step up the pace on the port tack 300 miles from the finishing line. After 118 days at sea, the Brest sailor is preparing to enter the history books as the third woman to complete the race, after Catherine Chabaud, 6th in 1996-1997 and Ellen Mac Arthur, second in the 2000-2001 edition. She is expected to arrive in Les Sables d’Olonne tomorrow afternoon. Anne will have to reach the channel before 14.40 GMT to take advantage of the tide.
Two women set out on the seventh of November on the start of this edition of the Vendée Globe. Karen Leibovici (Benefic) and Anne Liardet (Roxy) are both still at sea, and still in the race after 118 days of solitude, tough conditions and harsh competition. Anne has entered the home stretch in the Bay of Biscay, which she is crossing as the crow flies towards Les Sables d’Olonne. Her Roxy was less than 40 miles from Cape Finisterre, when she rounded it in tricky sea and wind conditions. However, the wind came around to the north west as forecast, and so the yachtswoman can hope to reach Les Sables early tomorrow afternoon, where she will receive an ovation from the local people.
Karen Leibovici now has less than 1500 miles to go to reach the finish. She is heading north towards the Azores at 8 knots.
Raphaël Dinelli (Akena Verandas) passed through the middle of the Azores, as planned. He is starting to turn in towards the Bay of Biscay at a good speed and this morning was just about a thousand miles from the finishing line. He is expected in Les Sables d’Olonne at the end of next week. One major difficulty still lies ahead for Raphaël, as he will have to cross a ridge of high pressure before picking up the north north westerly wind on the eastern edge of the high-pressure area.
