Bilou… Back again!
Keep an eye on Bilou (the famous nickname for Roland Jourdain), as he is one of the favourites at the start of this fifth edition of the Vendée Globe. Third back in 2001, this good-natured little guy with a mop of fair hair, and a fine sense of humour, has stayed with the Open 60 events, always up for the ride and hard at it ever since. Moreover, Roland Jourdain, a true sailor, who originally came from the Vallée des Fous, that legendary, area of Brittany, from where many of France´s ocean racing greats herald, has found in the kingdom of single-handed round the world sailing, the perfect way to express himself. For a while Chairman of the IMOCA class, Bilou has stood out in these events on his famous Lombard design, Sill, which he put to great use for a number of years, with a win in the Transat Jacques Vabre in 2001 in particular, followed by the Regatta Rubicon the year after and many Grand Prix events… An undisputed leader, at the helm of his fabulous monohull, Bilou has worked miracles and twice obtained the title of World Champion Skipper in the IMOCA class, in 2000 and 2001.
Aiming at victory
Mr. Jourdain owes this success to his extremely varied nautical experience, obtained on the world´s oceans over the last 20 years or so - Two Whitbreads, the Formula 40 events, countless single-handed Figaro events. In 2000, he lined up for the start of the non-stop, single-handed round the world race at the helm of a monohull that perfectly suited his nautical talents. Finishing in third place after experiencing some setbacks, he achieved his greatest yachting success. Back again for the next Vendée Globe, he started work at the last moment on the construction of a new 60-footer, in the same mould as that of his fellow sailor, his old frienc Jean Le Cam. His new Sill, once again designed by the designer Marc Lombard, is the most recent in her class. Having experienced some teething problems due to faulty fluttering keel, it would appear that Bilou now has his new companion well under control… and he is determined to win this time!
