She won over the yachting world during the last Vendée Globe by writing a fine chapter in the history of the Vendée Globe. As she was unable to find a partner, Anne Liardet will not be taking part this time. She is able to stand back without any bitterness, but with a certain nostalgia, to look at this exceptional race.
She cannot hide the fact that she loved it so much in 2004-2005 that she did her utmost to be there at the start of this year´s race. This race is not reserved for mere racers, as there is always room for emotions and enjoyment, as well as offering an occasion to learn how to deal with a certain type of loneliness.
You said you had to be there in the final days leading up to the start…
"I can remember what Mike Golding said at the finish of the last race, when he spoke to Jean and Vincent, who came in ahead of him: I know where I have been, I know where you went and you know where I have come from. There is this special link that is created between the yachtsmen, who take part in this race. Even if in our heads, we tend to forget all the tricky moments. You simply erase those tough times with a sort of filter in your head. So, yes, I couldn´t not be here…"
Is the Vendée Globe an adventure of a race?
"Even with a great line-up, the adventure aspect remains present. Even if this year there are a few little things about the boat designs that worry me. A round the world voyage cannot be a simple race. We all know how we are setting out, but we don´t know how we will be at the finish. Let´s not forget that those, who took part in the first Vendée Globe were not mere tourists either. What makes the Vendée Globe so wonderful is that it lasts quite some time and it becomes a great story."
And for you personally, how did the Vendée Globe change you?
"In fact, it didn´t really change me, but rather confirm some ideas. When I set out, I knew, having already tried it, that I loved solo sailing. What I didn´t know was that I would enjoy it for so long. However, I won´t forget that this solo adventure is only possible if you have a group of crazy guys working all hours to ensure your boat is ready at the start. This preparation phase is for me something that cannot be separated from the race itself."
Do you still feel as strongly about doing it again?
"Oh, yes indeed! More than ever. When I think back to the exit from the harbour in Les Sables, it still gives me a thrill. And I enjoyed myself so much at sea: apart from when I´m with my kids, I think that it´s when I´m at sea that I feel most at harmony with myself. "
