Ellen MacArthur is back at the heart of the Vendée Globe, enjoying an atmosphere which is truly unique in any global sport.

While she is almost inevitably besieged wherever she goes around the race site, she is still buzzing on the atmosphere, empathising with the skippers who are counting down to start, meeting with media, but most of all being a cornerstone of the sailing team that she gives her name to, BT Team Ellen. The company that she shares with Mark Turner, Offshore Challenges, conceived and built their Farr design in house in Cowes.
But the question Ellen is probably asked most often here is why she is not lining uo on Sunday in this historic field:
“ Well part of me is doing it this time to be honest, with Seb going around and with friends going round who I have know for years who are competing in this race, part of me is going around with them, and I will be following this race but I could definitely come back and do the Vendée again, it is an amazing race, it is one of the most incredible races you can ever compete in in your life and I would love to come back and do it again in the future, but I made a call, I made a decision, personally not to compete in this race. There is something for me that is more important to me which is working on the environment and trying to solve some of these massive issues that we all have on this planet.”
“ When I was a kid I thought the planet was the biggest place you could dream of, and now, having sailed around it a few times you realise it is not and we are not managing it very well, and there are some really big issues that need facing.
The best use of my time at the moment rather than going off and doing a round the world, and I would absolutely love to go off and do, but for me personally the environment objective comes first.” (more in Audio).
