The competitors are now tending to sail in pairs, which are scattered over more than 4000 miles, as the leader approaches the International Date line…
Of the three oceans that the Vendée Globe solo sailors have to cross, the Indian is — and always has been ever since the first races — without doubt the most violent, the most testing, and the most difficult. As the wild pace forced no fewer than six leading competitors out of the race between the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Leeuwin (Loïck Peyron, Dominique Wavre, Bernard Stamm, Jean-Baptiste Dejeanty, Mike Golding, Yann Eliès), the gaps between those still racing widened considerably even before they reach the International Date Line…
