Servane Escoffier, can you describe Louis in a few words?
He’s  a very passionate go-getter, very determined but very human, too.

How ready is he for his first Vendée Globe?
He is ready, yes, but because this is his very first Vendée Globe, I’m not sure you are ever completely ready before you actually face the conditions. But I can tell he’s determined, ready to go and so happy to be part of it.

You’re in a good position to understand how tough ad dangerous the Vendée Globe can be…
The Vendée Globe is a long-distance effort and the trickiest part is not to start too strong too fast. I think Louis wants to be reasonable throughout the race so he can finish. He is aware this is going to last three months…

What was your reaction when he told you he was going to compete in this Vendée Globe?
I immediately told his I was behind him 100%. Of course there’s always a little apprehension when someone you love goes away like that but I told him I’d do my best to stand by him. He knows I can manage the shore part, home, and our family.

« It’s so pleasant to have a passion in common »

You’re both involved in sailing, isn’t it a little difficult?
No, it just takes some organisation (she laughs). Seriously, it’s very pleasant to have a common passion, we can talk about it together.

You recently became parents, has it changed anything in the way you see your job?
A newborn necessarily changes many things but Louis knew he was going to be a father when he decided to compete in the Vendée Globe. It didn’t impact his determination and in September, Louis went at sea for a few days of training, he hasn’t modified his schedule. But of course when he’s home, he really enjoys the quality time he spends with his son and he takes really good care of him.

How will you stay in touch with Louis during the race?
Mostly by email, I guess, very regular emails, and then some phone calls too. Our son turns 1 on November 30 and my main role will be to take care of him, tell him about his dad every day and show him pictures. As for Louis, he will be informed of everything.

What are his goals for this Vendée?
Louis just loves competition so he’ll do his best to be in contact with the rest of the boats. But when participating in one’s first Vendée Globe, all you want is be able to finish.

How about you, are you interested in possibly competing in the Vendée Globe in the future?
I qualified for the last Vendée Globe but I didn’t have enough money. Everything in its own time, you know, what really matters now is Louis’ project, which is definitely keeping us busy enough. I’m not asking myself the question. We work hard to give Louis the best conditions to succeed in this Vendée Globe. We’ll see what happens after the race…
