Amaiur Alfaro

According to the French daily newspaper, Sud-Ouest, Amaiur Alfaro is hoping to compete in the next Vendée Globe. Last summer, the Basque skipper finished in 39th place in the Solitaire du Figaro, after suffering a lot of damage. “I realize today that if you want to do well in a race like the Solitaire, it requires a lot of funding.  You can’t just get up and go, as you have to struggle to find sponsors and find the time to train. A top class sportsman can’t be a salesman at the same time.”  The sailor from Hendaye has learnt a lot from this experience, which was tough, but enriching, and this should help him take up his next challenge: to make it to the start of the next non-stop, solo round the world race. We should add that his best performance to date was his third place in the 2009 Transat Jacques Vabre, when he raced aboard a Multi 50 alongside Lalou Roucayrol.
