Département de la Vendée
From the moment it began, the Vendée Globe yacht race has belonged to the hearts of a French département. Along with the Conseil Départemental de la Vendée, the town of Les Sables d’Olonne, the company SODEBO and the Région des Pays de la Loire, some thirty large companies from the Vendée department have come on board, making the Vendée the organiser of one of the greatest yacht races in the world.
The bet has paid off. Not only is the Vendée Globe a great sporting event, it is also followed in France and abroad by a great many enthusiasts, not exclusively by those who love sailing. The Département puts a great deal of effort into the event, particularly into the Vendée Globe Junior so that the Vendée Globe remains a public asset open to all.
Whilst the Vendée Globe is the symbol of the département’s dynamism, it attracts major benefits in terms of economy and tourism. More than 2 million people came to the Vendée for the start and the finishes of the 2012 edition of the race. Tens of thousands of reports and articles were devoted to the race or to the département.
It is highly likely that the 2016 edition will reach record proportions. The skippers are already dreaming of entering the race’s legend in crossing the starting line on 6th November 2016, and of beating 78-day record set by François Gabart.
