Sébastien Josse is a strong all-rounder, who enjoys flying on three hulls in Quiberon Bay, as well as sailing around the world on a monohull. Someone, who enjoys a challenge, while questioning everything he does, Josse is not someone, who rests on his laurels and is not the type to boast of his achievements on his CV, but he has taken part in the three major round the world events: the Vendée Globe, the Jules Verne Trophy and the Volvo Ocean Race.

Sébastien has a real passion for the sea, which he discovered in Nice, where he was brought up on the family boat. At the age of 18, he crossed the Atlantic with his father, before taking a year off in the West Indies, where he continued to sail solo. Back in France, he knew what he wanted and that was to make sailing his living. In 1997, he won the Crédit Agricole Youth Challenge and won the right to sail for two seasons in the Figaro class. Second in the rookies in the 1998 Solitaire, he finished second in the event three years later. Then, one of the most promising youngsters in the sport, Sébastien was taken aboard the maxi-catamaran Orange by Bruno Peyron for the Jules Verne Trophy, the crewed round the world race. The record was shattered with the crew completing the race in 64 days. After this experience, Josse was able to line up at the age of 29 for his first Vendée Globe in 2004/2005 finishing in fifth place, after 93 days of sailing and in spite of a lot of little problems.

One challenge followed another: Josse became the skipper of the VOR70 ABN Amro 2 in the Volvo Ocean Race in 2005/2006, the crewed race around the world with stopovers. This race was to leave its mark on him. Shortly after losing a crewman overboard, he rescued the crew of a rival boat, which was sinking. In terms of the race, Josse finished in fourth place and discovered a very different type of racing in amongst the English speakers.

Returning to the Vendée Globe in 2008, Sébastien was one of the favourites, but unfortunately was forced to retire after 48 days of sailing, while he was up with the leaders. It was a huge disappointment, but Sébastien bounced back and surprised many by becoming the skipper of the Gitana 11 trimaran and then the Edmond de Rothschild MOD70 aboard which he won the 2013 Transat Jacques Vabre and finished in third place in the 2014 Route du Rhum. On 6th November 2016, he will once again be tackling the Vendée Globe, before continuing to race aboard a brand new multihull. An all-rounder, as we said…

Edmond de Rothschild
The third new generation IMOCA monohull to be revealed has a lot of points in common with her elder sisters – Safran and Banque Populaire –, in particular with the shape of her hull. Designed by the pairing of VPLP-Verdier, in close collaboration with the research team at Gitana Team, Sébastien Josse’s 60-foot IMOCA nevertheless has a few differences: the cockpit is very open and lower down, the foils have a different shape, the layout and the internal fittings. Very light, this new prototype is designed to perform well, but after his retirement in the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe, Sébastien Josse has made reliability a priority. During the training sessions, she was one of the two fastest foilers in the fleet, up there in terms of high performance with Armel Le Cléac’h’s Banque Populaire.
