A ridge of high pressure blocking the way
Weather
November 16. 2008Those, who have opted for a route to the west have been severely slowed down during the night by a ridge of high pressure thwarting their plans.
They got too close to this zone and lost miles in comparison to the three frontrunners.
The wind will be returning from the south today, so the leaders will be the first to benefit in the coming hours.
An E to NE'ly wind blowing between 10 and 18 knots from north to south will be blowing on the fleet.
Some of those chasing after the frontrunners are finding it tricky to get away from the wind shadow of the Canaries.
Foncia far off to the west of the Canaries is keeping the wind, 15 knots from the ENE, making Michel Desjoyeaux the quickest in the fleet, and that is likely to continue today!
At the rear, the coast of Portugal is still posing problems with light and variable winds.
Ahead, the Cape Verde Islands with their mountains and wind shadow... Yet more manoeuvres to get through during the night.
