Light winds at the front, stronger behind
Weather
November 19. 2008The Doldrums were fairly active on Tuesday, but lost a little of their strength during the night. Yesterday the leaders experienced a lot of thundery squalls to the south, but they have now disappeared. Nevertheless, the zone of variable light E'ly winds remains wide: between 200 and 300 miles according to the longitude. The leading group will therefore be slowed down again today and tomorrow.
The ITCZ offers a varied range of conditions with thunderstorms in particular, but also varies in its latitude. Fluctuations by one or two degrees of latitude are possible in the coming days. Those chasing after the leaders are continuing to benefit from a steadier trade wind, even if the strength is lighter to the south of Cape Verde. The huge high over the NE Atlantic is generating a strong NE'ly wind allowing those furthest north to sail southwards in favourable winds, in spite of the presence of thunderstorms.
