Ridge of high pressure on the edge of the Forties
Weather
November 30. 2008The leaders are making their way away from the ridge originating form the St. Helena high. The wind is gradually becoming a more stable westerly, blowing at around 15 knots, with the stronger winds further south (20 to 25 knots) at between 40 and 45 degrees of latitude south. Each competitor will have to choose the latitude at which they will change their route to move eastwards. Sunday will be given over to this choice meaning some will be moving a long way south.
While the 13 leading boats are on the ridge or coming off it, that is not the case for those following on behind, who are about to enter or approach the zone.
The competitors north of 25° south will take advantage of the St. Helena high moving off north-eastwards and will be able to take a short cut thanks to more favourable winds than those ahead of them. Indeed, the two thundery lows along the south American coast will be generating strong winds where they will be sailing in the coming days.
