Strengthening of the flow from the NW
Weather
December 02. 2008While the leading group (the 11 frontrunners are still under the influence of a cold front generating 20-25 knots NW'ly winds (gusts 30 knots). Behind the situation is rather different: The wind has already eased off and backed W'ly, stopping them from achieving the speeds seen at the head of the fleet.
Over the next few hours, it is however strengthening of the NW'ly wind for competitors above 37°S that is the main feature. The thundery low off Brazil will reach the tail-enders, generating 30-35 knots winds. The thundery squalls associate with this system are accompanied by 45-50 knot gusts. Those sailing in this zone need to be particularly cautious. The 3 competitors the furthest north will be on the edge of these strong winds, which will chiefly blow south of them.
