High over the south of the fleet, as a new low moves in
Weather
December 05. 2008While some of the leading group are in lighter winds, this is not the case for those further north, who are taking advantage of the stronger winds for longer. Nevertheless the twelve frontrunners will all have to deal with this small high sooner or later, depending on their latitude. Those chasing on behind have been experiencing freshening winds since this morning as a new low moves in from South America. This low, which was for a long time stationary started to move yesterday morning and is making its way along the south of the fleet at a speed of 35-40 knots. This system, which is in fact similar to the previous one will sweep away the high pressure area off South Africa on Saturday and will thus expose everyone to a disturbed flow, which was temporarily interrupted by the small high. Waves of 6 to 8 metres can be expected in the south of the race course.
