Second in a long series...
Weather
December 06. 2008The second lot of gales, which are already affecting those at the rear of the fleet will be reaching those at the front around lunchtime today. The speeds of the frontrunners are set to remain high for at least 24 hours. Strong downwind conditions and a westerly swell will allow average speeds in excess of 17/18 knots. Once the low goes by to the south of them (early in the night) it will be affecting them for at least the first two days of their voyage in the Indian Ocean .
While the leaders can rely on these winds to propel them on their way, those following on behind will be under the influence of a ridge of high pressure lying NW/SE where they will find lighter winds. However, the respite will be short, as already by Sunday the next low will be coming up on those at the rear of the fleet.
