Slightly calmer seas
Weather
December 29. 2008Over the past 24hours the heavy cross seas have eased for the whole of the fleet.
The leaders ahead of a cold front are sailing in NW'ly winds caused by a very deep low to their south.
This area of strong winds is associated with a cold front and is moving off more quickly for the competitors, with the wind at the front first...the wind is lifting for those chasing after them. The group from Paprec to Roxy is sailing on a ridge of high pressure, which will see their wind shifting from the SW to W and finally NW.
In the middle of the fleet there is a moderate to strong NW'ly ahead of a low coming down from New Zealand. Maybe they will sail a long way with this, but they are going to have to keep up the pace!
The rear of the fleet has been caught by a small low in their trajectory, so they need to avoid staying too far south, where they would find light winds and headwinds. The group to the south of Tasmania is sailing in a steady SW'ly wind.
