Sébastien DESTREMAU

53 years old

Toulon

“When I was young I couldn’t scull, so that’s how I ended up becoming a pro sailor!” Sébastien Destremau is good with words, which is no surprise, as apart from being a skilful racer, he is also a sports journalist. Sébastien Destremau will be setting out aboard an older boat, launched back in 1998. His first goal is to complete the race and have a good story to tell.

“What I don’t have I can’t break”... that is Sébastien’s philosophy with FaceOcean a boat that he presents as being simple, reliable and a good performer. Sébastien Destremau has already climbed to three major summits in the world of sailing, as he went through an Olympic preparation, took part in several America’s Cup campaigns and the Volvo Ocean Race, the crewed round the world race with stopovers. The idea of making it to the top of the fourth peak by competing in the solo round the world race has been on his mind for some time. Commentator for a major TV station for the start of the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe from Les Sables d’Olonne, he also launched a channel on dailymotion (100 Million videos viewed so far).

On the eve of the start in 2012, Sébastien decided that he would compete in 2016. Last May his efforts were rewarded by the purchase of an IMOCA, making his project seem that much more real and believable. Thanks to his experience on other boats, Sébastien Destremau tackled the new boat with confidence, while at the same time feeling an adrenalin rush and stress with the fear of taking things too fast. He took a big leap forward this summer sailing for 42 days on FaceOcean with a double-handed delivery trip between Cape Town (South Africa) and Toulon, the boat’s new home port. Sébastien will be 52, when he starts the Vendée Globe. His professionalism and upbeat mood will certainly give a lot of pleasure to those following him around the world..

Face Ocean
Since she was launched in 1998, Sébastien Destremau’s boat has taken part in four races around the world, including two Vendée Globe races in the hands of the British sailors, Josh Hall (9th in 2000-2001) and Steve White (8th in 2008-2009). This well built boat designed by Finot is not as tough to sail as today’s IMOCAs. Face Ocean corresponds perfectly to Sébastien Destremau’s project: he wants to complete the race without being overwhelmed by technical problems.
