The rumours had been going around for months, but the information has now been officially confirmed. Marc Guillemot will be handing over the baton to Morgan Lagravière after the 2014 Route du Rhum. In spite of his age, the sailor from Reunion Island has already achieved a long list of successes. After joining the French Olympic sailing team in 2008, Lagravière was chosen among 50 competitors to defend the colours of Vendée in the Figaro circuit, which he successfully achieved with two places on the podium in the Solitaire (2nd in 2012, 3rd in 2013) and won the title of French solo offshore racing champion. So seeing him join the IMOCA class is not really a surprise.

The year 2014 looks like being a busy one for Morgan Lagravière, who will be monitoring the design and build of the new 60-foot Safran monohull based on plans by the VPLP / Verdier team, which will be developed in partnership with Banque Populaire (who will be lining up at the start of the 2016 Vendée Globe with Armel Le Cléac’h at the helm). The two sponsors will be combining their efforts to keep costs development down and building their boats from the same mould. To get used to IMOCA sailing, Lagravière will also be competing in two double-handed races with Marc Guillemot: the Douarnenez Grand Prix in May and the New York – Barcelona race in June.
