The doldrums represent the inter-tropical convergence zone. They are dreaded for their changeable weather. In the Atlantic, it lies to the north of the equator. The skippers therefore cross it twice during the race. This zone is highly unstable. The winds can suddenly become violent and be accompanied by torrential rain.
