How Technological Innovation Benefits the Entire Vendée Globe Fleet

Next-generation foils, advanced composite materials, onboard electronics and renewable energy systems… With every edition of the Vendée Globe, IMOCA yachts continue to push the boundaries of performance. Yet these innovations do not benefit only the latest launches. They gradually improve the safety, reliability and performance of the entire fleet, enabling boats from different generations to remain competitive and dependable throughout a round-the-world race.

Ever More Advanced Foils

Since the 2016 Vendée Globe, foils have transformed the face of offshore racing. Designed to reduce drag and increase speed, they have continued to evolve with each new generation, becoming not only more efficient but also more versatile and easier to control.

The latest foils are no longer designed simply to maximise lift. Their geometry is carefully optimised to deliver greater stability in rough seas, allowing skippers to maintain a consistently high pace while reducing the structural loads experienced by the boat. As new IMOCA yachts are launched and existing boats undergo major refits, these advances gradually benefit the entire fleet.

Ever More Reliable Boats

In the Vendée Globe, where skippers race solo for almost three months without outside assistance, performance counts for little without reliability. Innovation is therefore focused as much on durability as on outright speed, ensuring the boats can withstand weeks of racing in some of the harshest conditions on the planet.

Advances in composite materials, design methods and simulation tools now allow every component to be optimised, reducing the risk of failure while increasing the overall strength of IMOCA yachts. Every edition of the Vendée Globe provides valuable feedback. A component failure, a structural weakness or a system reaching its limits all become lessons that are incorporated into the next generation of boats or introduced during the refit of existing IMOCA. Over time, these improvements benefit the entire class, including campaigns racing older-generation boats.

Technology Supporting the Skipper

During the Vendée Globe, the autopilot is often regarded as the skipper's most valuable crewmate. Working in conjunction with onboard sensors and performance analysis tools, it is now capable of steering with remarkable precision for hours at a time, allowing the sailor to rest or focus on weather routing, race strategy and maintenance.

These systems help skippers unlock the full potential of their boats while making better-informed decisions. The objective is simple: to enable them to sail for longer, with greater confidence and under safer conditions.

Innovation Also Driving the Energy Transition

IMOCA yachts are also evolving in the way they generate the electrical power required on board. On many boats, solar panels and hydrogenerators now supply a large proportion of the energy needed to power navigation instruments, communication systems and the autopilot.

The aim is to minimise reliance on fossil fuels while maintaining the autonomy and safety essential to solo offshore racing.

This evolution is also reflected in the class rules. Ahead of the 2028 Vendée Globe, the Notice of Race strengthens the requirements relating to the energy transition. Skippers will be expected to generate most of their onboard energy using decarbonised solutions, while retaining a reserve of 60 litres of fuel for exceptional situations.

Projects equipped with fully electric propulsion systems will also be required to demonstrate a minimum endurance of five hours at 5 knots using energy stored in their batteries. These new requirements illustrate the ongoing search for the right balance between energy efficiency and safety, even though IMOCA yachts already operate with exceptionally low energy consumption during a round-the-world race.

Innovation for the Benefit of a Diverse Fleet

While some campaigns have the resources to develop the very latest technologies, the Vendée Globe continues to bring together boats from different generations, teams competing for victory, sailors discovering the IMOCA circuit, and projects supporting environmental or charitable causes.

Unlike many other technology-driven sports, where innovation often remains the preserve of the best-funded teams, the IMOCA class operates as a collective laboratory. New developments gradually spread from one project to another, allowing the entire fleet to become safer, more reliable and more competitive, while preserving the diversity that defines the class.

That is also what makes the Vendée Globe unique. On the same starting line, IMOCA yachts from different generations line up side by side, each with its own sporting ambition and story to tell. Every project benefits, in its own way, from the innovations developed over successive campaigns. It is this continuous sharing of knowledge that enables the Vendée Globe to combine constant innovation, a remarkable diversity of projects and an extraordinary human adventure.
