Emotion and memories: the skippers relate their ceremony

On Saturday 10 May, Les Sables d'Olonne recaptured the magic of the Vendée Globe with a grand ceremony to celebrate the skippers of the 2024 edition. The eagerly-awaited event drew large crowds along the channel, despite the capricious weather. With a mix of popular fervour and emotional sequences, the celebration left a lasting impression. Justine Mettraux, Manu Cousin and Benjamin Ferré give us their impressions.

A majestic nautical parade

From 6.30pm, the channel in Les Sables d'Olonne lit up to the rhythm of a spectacular nautical parade. Despite the heavy rain, the public's enthusiasm remained intact. Thousands of people lined the quays, braving the inclement weather to cheer the sailors on their epic round-the-world voyage. The skippers made their appearance at the heart of a majestic nautical parade. Alongside sixty or so boats illuminated and set to the rhythm of the music, they were hailed as the true heroes of an extraordinary human and maritime adventure. The crowd, compact and vibrant, testified to the deep attachment of Les Sables d'Olonne to these exceptional sailors. Justine Mettraux, skipper of TeamWork - Team Snef, made no secret of her emotion.

There were a lot of people on the quays. Even though the weather wasn't really on our side, the atmosphere was great and it was a pleasure to meet up with all the skippers. Going up the channel is always an impressive moment, even when it's not on our boats, but on launches. Seeing so many people cheering us on was really great. The ceremony brought back a lot of memories. It was a beautiful moment, a wonderful way to end this adventure, surrounded by everyone.

Charlie Dalin, the undisputed winner of this 2024 edition, was unable to attend the event for health reasons. It was a blow for the skipper, who was also celebrating his birthday on the day. His absence left a void among the spectators and the skippers, adding a special touch of emotion.

A festive atmosphere despite the unexpected

Despite the cancellation of the drone show, initially scheduled to light up the Sablais skies, the atmosphere remained electric. The musical entertainment, artistic performances and infectious energy of the artists present made up for this setback, transforming the evening into a veritable whirlwind of festivities and colour. For Manu Cousin, skipper of Coup de Pouce, the emotion was palpable.

It was a really great time. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't on our side: the front came through at the worst possible moment, just as we left the pontoon, and the deluge started. Despite that, it was incredible to see that the public turned out in such numbers, as they always do in Les Sables d'Olonne. It was impressive to see so many people crowding along the channel!

He continues enthusiastically: ‘It was also a real pleasure to see all the skippers again. For many of us, it was the first time since the finish that we'd seen each other again in a festive setting. The atmosphere was magnificent, the music was resounding and the public seemed enchanted. There's always that unique emotion when you go up the channel. Even if you're from Sablais and use it dozens of times a year, it's still a special moment. Last night, we really relived our start and finish of the Vendée Globe. The fireworks were splendid, a magical moment that enhanced the prize-giving ceremony. It was another unforgettable evening.

A unique link between the public and the skippers

Benjamin Ferré, skipper of Monnoyeur - Duo for a Job, felt this very special connection between the sailors and the public with intensity:

It was a really great time. Getting together with other skippers, sharing an evening, talking, exchanging ideas... You don't often get the chance to do that, and we really enjoyed it here. It was a great moment of conviviality, and it was good to relive those emotions together.

The loyalty of the public, even in the heavy rain, had a profound effect on him: ‘I'm always impressed to see the extent to which people turn out, even when soaked from head to toe. This incredible loyalty is also what makes the magic of the Vendée Globe. Les Sables d'Olonne vibrates thanks to this unique link between the skippers and the spectators. When you come back here, there's always that little twinge in your heart. The channel, the applause, the familiar faces... it's a powerful moment every time.

A grand finale for an unforgettable evening

Shortly before 11pm, a monumental firework display brought this memorable celebration to a close, setting the sky ablaze in a thousand brilliant shades and saluting, in a final explosion of light, the spirit of adventure and fraternity that characterises the Vendée Globe. This evening, marked by emotion, sharing and memories of this legendary race, was a powerful reminder of the maritime soul of Les Sables d'Olonne. A vibrant tribute to the heroes of the oceans, who, even far from the waves, continue to inspire entire generations.
